Our Philosophy

What is a doula?
“Doula” (pronounce doo-la) literally means “Woman’s servant” in the Greek language. During birth, a doula is a source of support both emotionally and physically. She can act as a liaison between you, your partner, and medical professionals (if you are giving birth in a hospital or birth center).
Historically, women entered into birth with wisdom and knowledge passed down from generations of the mothers before them. Other women in their family and community surrounded the laboring woman with encouragement and reassuring words. Sadly, this network of women is not a reality for most new mothers in the United States. Yet, this does not mean that women have to walk this journey alone. Doulas are trained, non-clinical professionals who an help to create a loving, safe environment for you to have your baby, encouraging you to trust your amazing body to bring forth a miracle.
Birth can be an overwhelming experience for you and your partner. Fear of the unknown can quickly taint this special time. Birth doulas are a calm, comforting presence. They enter into the mixture of joy, pain, worry, and elation with experienced understanding. A doula can help you to sift through new information, and help to provide the time and space necessary for you to make empowered, informed decisions. We can facilitate communication between you and your partner and provide methods for you both to feel connected throughout the birth. We are there to nurture and protect the memory of your birth experience, whatever your choices may be.
